| Field notes | Clustered. Stem collected 850 cm long up to crownshaft, 10 cm in diam. at breast height, armed with spines basally up to 5.5 cm long, proximal internodes to 15 cm long, covered by crustaceous lichens, longitudinally fissured, leafscars inconspicuous, distal internodes 15-30 mm long, densely covered by black 15-16 mm long spines, green with patches of ferruginous feltation. Leaves 11. Leaf sheaths 60-70 cm, almost entirely tubular, cream-colored and sparsely covered by up to 10 mm , long spines. Petiole 12-15 cm long. Rachis 210-230 cm. Pinnae 2 X 57-59, distributed in one plane, evenly spaced, graciously pendent. One inflorescence at staminate anthesis: rachis, rachillae and flowers yellow. Peduncle with red tinge and covered by ferruginous pubescence. Two infructescences: Peduncle red or greenish yellow with red tinge. Fruits black at maturity, about 11 mm in diam. |
