| Field notes | Solitary palm. Individual collected 3 m tall but other observed up to 7 m tall. Stem diam. about 7 cm. Stem white, covered by feltlike tomentum. Number of leaves in crown 11. Petioles from 12 cm long to 225 cm long in older leaves, only with few minute spines at the base, flattened above, rounded below, the abaxial face rough and brown basally, higher up green in the middle flanked by two brown stripes, these gradually narrowing into two carrinae, not recognisable above 40-50 above the petiole base. Transition from leaf sheath to petiole gradual. Inflorescences 4, at anthesis. Prophyll 19-20 cm long, brownish chartaceous, splitting apically along abaxial and adaxial faces. Insertion of first peduncular bract about 20 cm above prophyll, greenish chartaceous to coriaceous, covered by short ferrugenuous tomentum, distributed in patches, splitting apically. Peduncle 45 cm long. Peduncular bract about 15 cm long. Number of partial inflorescences 8. Partial inflorescences branched to first order. Basalmost partial inflorescence with rachis 5-6 cm long. Rachillae of more or less the same length throughout the 3 proximal partial inflorescences, 25-26 cm, thereafter decreasing in length. Flowers rounded in outline, fleshy, calyx green and corolla whitish green, with reddish tinge at the base of the exposed part. Gynoecium reddish inside. Locule and seed of unripe fruits pink. Mature fruit yellow 3.5 x 2.5 cm, rounded in one end, obtuse in the other. Use: construction. For post in houses. Nom vern.: "Brunei bral" (Bewani talkplace). |
