| Field notes | Solitary palm 22 m tall, diam. at base 26 cm, distance between leaf scars basally 35-50 cm, distally about 4 cm, width of leaf scars 1-2 cm. Leaf sheath 170 cm long, tubular forming a crown shaft, 26 cm in diam., green, glabrous with scattered spots, split 20-25 cm long, margin brown chartaceous, desintegrating in fibres only at the apex. Petiole short or missing. Rachis 394 cm long, 6 cm wide at basis, bend towards the apex, proximally with flattened face adaxially, green, covered by patches of ferrugeneous tomentum, this decreasingly dense and almost absent from 60-70 cm from the base and upward, the flattened adaxial face decreasing in width to ultimately a sharp carina above the middle, abaxial side of rachis rounded throughout and covered by ferrugeneous to grey indumentum, least dense at the middle part. Pinnae 2 x 86, regularly distributed in one plane, opposite to subopposite, pending. One inflorescence at anthesis, two infructescences with immature fruits. Inflorescence with a few cm long peduncle, 13 cm wide basally with brown, chartaceous remnants from the deciduous prophyll and PD bracts, the scars of which are very close. Rachis 56 cm long, mat green with red tinge. Inflorescence branches to 3'rd order. Basalmost first order branch 51 cm long, with 13 second order branches. Basalmost second order branch 14 cm long, with 7 rachillae. Rachillae of almost the same length throughout, 50-70 cm long, curved with drooping apices. Staminate flowers white, all flowering branches like the rachis in colour and haircovering. Infructescence with more or less the same dimension as the inflorescence, the branches being lighter green, shiny to mat, glabrous, fruits green. |
