Field notes Middle sized clustering palm, with no stems more than 5 m tall. Stem diam. 4 cm. Distance between the scars 17-18 cm basally, 5 cm distally, width of af leaf scars about 1 cm. Stem covered by grey crustaceous lichens. Leafsheath 52-55 cm long, tubular, forming a crownshaft, minutely ridged, greenish beige basally to dark green or black distally, mat, covered by grey tomentum in patches, particularly along the middle. Petiole 50-80 cm long, furrowed adaxially, deeply rounded abaxially, dark green. Rachis 130 cm long, abaxially rounded, green, adaxially with two flat, minutely ridged, flat faces meeting in a carina. Number of pinnae 2 x 19, unequally distributed in groups of no more than 2, some with one or two splits to the base, some pinnae held above the plane. Individual collected with one inflorescense at preanthesis, one infloresence bud, and one infructescence with unripe fruits. Prophyll of inflorescence bud 28 cm long with auriculate base and obtuse apex, glabrous, greenish yellow with red tinge, PD bract breaking through prophyll, the distal 6 - 7 cm exposed, texture and and colour as prophyll. Inflorescence red with reddish beige rachis, all parts covered by minute burgundy hairs, very dense on the adaxial side of the rachis. Infructescence with young fruits, colour more or less the same as inflorescence, but covered with patches of almost black indumentum. Fruits deep purple with beige beak. Nom. vern.: "Kuabe" (Olo talkplace).
