Field notes Solitary palm tree, 15-20 m tall. Stem 28 cm in diam at breast height, nodes 10 cm long basally and 20-35 cm long about 2 m higher up. Leaf scars ca. 1 cm wide. Cone of proproots 20-40 cm tall, basal diam 50 cm, individual proproots about 1 cm in diam. Stem covered by crustaceous lichens, greyish brown. Number of leaves 8-10. Leaf bases 150+ cm long, tubular, splitting deeply to 1+ m, desintegrating along split in fibrous mesh, with greyish feltation on exposed parts except distally, here green and covered by crustaceous lichens. Petiole short to lacking. Rachis rounded below diameter at basis 6 cm, and with two flat faces above upon which the 1st order pinnae are inserted. Number of pinnae bearing secondary rachillae 2 x 16 (mid segment partly desintegrated). Proximal secondary rachilla 50 cm long with 6 x 2 pinnae, next one 80 cm long with 13 x 2 pinnae, then 115 cm long with 16 x 2 pinnae. Longest secondary rachilla on the middle of the blade 100 cm long with 23 x 2 +1 pinnae (base, mid and apex collected). Flowering sequence basipetal. Individual collected carrying two infructescences with unripe fruits. Prophyll 27 cm long, yellowish green and covered by greyish brown feltation Number of peduncular bracts 2, first one insereted 2 cm above prophyll and 45 cm long, second one inserted 7 cm above and 87 cm long, both greyish brown, desintegrating, covered by patches of dense ferrugenuous feltation. Peduncle 50 cm long, 11 cm wide at base, 13 cm wide at the middle incl. the peduncular bracts. Rachis 70 cm long branched to 1st order with about 300 pendent rachillae, these approx 160 cm long throughout. Fruits olive green, wider than long, 2.2 x 1.8 cm. var. papuana Becc.
