Field notes Single stemmed palm, 3-4 m tall. Stem 4-5 cm in diam. Leaf base tubular basally for 15 cm, open for 28 cm, colour beige on unexposed parts, otherwise green and glabrous, margin chartaceous to fibrous. Petiole 85 cm long, subterete, deeply channeled proximally to almost terete distally. Rachis 165 cm long. Number of pinnae 2 X 22, distributed in one plane, subopposite, regularly spaced. Pinnae with 8 primary veins, dark, glossy green above, light glossy green below, ligular tip 7.5 cm long. Infructescences 2, one in fruit (described), one past fruiting. Inflorescences 2-3 at each node, basally fused for 2 cm. Prophyll 58 cm long. Peduncular bract , tubular, about 100 cm long, inserted immediately above prophyll, brown, chartaceous, splitting apically, but not desintegrating. Peduncle 120 cm long, exposed part green, covered by brown ramenta, with 3-4 small ligular bracts. Rachis 95-100 cm long, bright green. Fruits changing colour through maturation from lime green, to light yellow, then orange, finally scarlet to deep red. Cupules remaining on rachis after fruits have been shed.
