| Field notes | Common in 300 x 300 m forest patch surrounded by Kunai grassland. Distance between mature specimens ca 25-50 m. Solitary. Stem 12.5 m tall (individuals up to 25 m tall observed). Diameter 36 cm. Outer part of stem very hard. Inner part pink and softer. Leaves in crown 20. Leaf sheaths 1.3 m long split to the base with additional 50 cm long split below petiole. Petiole 1.5-1.8 m long, deeply furrowed with very sharp unarmed edges. Leaf blade bluish green. Costa asymmetrical at the base ca 40 cm long. Folds in blade 78. Basal fold: length 1.3 m, short incisions 2 cm long, deep incision 28 cm long. Lateral fold: length 1.6.m, short incisions 1 cm long, deep incision 46 cm long. Mid fold: length 1.9 m, short incisions 1 cm, deep incision 100 cm. Number of infructescences in crown 3, unbranching. Largest infructescence: , prophyll 35 cm long, peduncle 80 cm long, number of PD bracts 3, rachis 50 cm long. Mature fruits shinning black, 11 cm long, 9 cm wide, slightly triangular in cross section, with 3 large seeds enclosed in whitish husk. Endocarp 2 mm thick and very hard. Endosperm homogeneous, white. The palm is very important culturally and socially to the villagers who, among other purposes, uses it to built their spirit houses.
