| Field notes | Stem solitary, 102 cm circum., 33 cm diam, 2 m tall, rough with leaf scars. Leaves 18 (but lower ones cut off); sheath and petiole 170 cm long, fibrous on margins, abaxial surface of sheath white tomentose with median green stripe, petiole flat adaxially, rounded abaxially; rachis 238 cm long; pinnae slightly clustered, especially proximally on rachis. Inflorescence interfoliar, buds erect, becoming pendulous at anthesis; inflorescence protandrous, no apparent direction to anthesis. Staminate buds orange-brown, flowers yellow at anthesis with ca 14 stamens. Inflorescence visited by various small bees and wasps and one large bee, slight scent to staminate flowers at 1.00 pm.Fibers are collected by local people and taken to town and made into ropes and saddles for mules. Fruits are eaten occasionally. Leaves used for thatching, and made into fans. The rope made from the fiber is called 'zunca'. N.v. 'Palma zunca' |
