| Field notes | Trunk columnar, approx 15 m with 2 m cone of black stilt roots with spines, nearly vertical and very close together. Crownshaft green, 1.2 m long. Leaves 6. Petiole 30 cm, round in cross section. Rachis 3 m long, shaped, with 19 pairs of pinnae, 5-10 cm apart. Apical pinnae split into 4 sections. Pinnae split into 13-14 segments, the proximal the largest, the distal linear and pointing vertically from rachis. The largest 97 cm long. Inflorescences infrafoliar, 2 in fruit, 2 between pistillate and staminate anthesis, 1 long bud and several shorter ones. Peduncle round, 24 cm long, 6 cm diam, with 13 bract scars. Rachillae 37, proximal 10 bifurcate, 8 mm in diam, 1 m long. Pistillate buds borne in 7 spirally arranged series round rachillae, with buds all the way to tips of rachillae. Weevils inside bud. Fruit globose, 2.8 mm x 2.8 mm. |
