| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome long-creeping (36-54 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 1.75 m long. Base to 2.5 cm diam., red when young. Sheath yellow green, margin red when young. Ligule 5-6 mm long, wine-red to brown. Petiole 5 mm long. Lamina to 28x6.5 cm, mid-green, not plicate, glabrous, base cuneate, apex recurved. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncule 3-3.5 cm long, subterranean, with brown bracts. Spike loose, 3.5x3 cm diam. (incl. bracts only), flowers extending 4 cm above bracts, with 17 flowers, 2 open at a time. Bract, bracteole and calyx pale yellow-green, bud pinkish. Corolla white; upper 5 mm of lobes tinged pink especially near margin. Labellum cream with pale yellow-green centre; terminal lobe deeply bilobed, pale pink. Stamen and stigma cream. Taste of centre of lower leafy shoot: very bitter. common to 1200 m. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
