| Field notes | Terrestrial herb. Rhizome creeping (to 9 cm between neighbouring leafy shoots). Leafy shoot to 2.8 cm long. Base to 3 cm diam. Sheath green. Ligule to 4 mm long, ±bilobed, unequal. Petiole 1.2 cm long. Lamina to 57 x 6.6 cm, base attenuate. Inflorescence terminal to subterminal, erect. Bracts pale greenish cream or pale red. Axis red. Pedicel red. Ovary yellow-green. Calyx red or white. Corolla red or white. Stamen pale red with darker crest or white with red crest. Labelleum white with red terminal centre or with just red lines or plain white; in any case bordered by green patches. Stamen and stigma white, pale red or red. Infructescence to 17 cm long, axis pale red. Fruit globose, green when young, yellow when ripe. Seed brown, aril white. Vernacular name: tu’is padi (Minahassa South language); fruit edible and so popular people take plants from the forest to plant in their gardens. The floral colour variation from white to red was observed between plants growing next to each other at ridge at 1125 m. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
