| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome stout, creeping, 20-30 cm between neighbouring shoots, scales pinkish red when young. Leafy shoots to 4.5 m long. Base to 7 cm diam. Sheath green. Ligule to 1.3 cm long. Petiole to 3 cm long. Lamina 59 x 14 cm, not plicate, young leaves pale red beneath; base cordate, +/- oblique. Inflorescence radical, c. 20 cm long, erect, ellipsoid. Peduncle 12-15 cm long, bracts orange-brown. Spike 5-7 (-9 when fruiting base) x 4-4.5 cm (bracts only). Flowers extending 2.5 cm above bracts, with 1-4 flowers open at a atime. Receptacle extending with age: to 7 cm long when mature fruits have developed at base. bracts pale orange-brown with reddish tinge margin. Bracteole pale orange-brown. Ovary white. Calyx cream with pale pink apex. Corolla tube white; lobes faintly pink. Labellum pale yellowish cream; base of latearl lobes pale pink. Stamen and stigma pale pink. Infrutescence to 8.5 cm wide; fertile bract and bracteole persistent. Fruit 2-2.5 x 2.2 cm, red, flat-topped, with spines. Seed with pale pink aril. Taste of centre of lower leafy shoot: aniseed.
