| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome stout, creeping, 20-30 cm between neighbouring shoots, scales pinkish red when young. Leafy shoots to 4.5 m long. Base to 7 cm diam. Sheath green. Ligule to 1.3 cm long. Petiole to 3 cm long. Lamina 59 x 14 cm, not plicate, young leaves pale red beneath; base cordate, +/- oblique. Inflorescence radical, c. 20 cm long, erect, ellipsoid. Peduncle 12-15 cm long, bracts orange-brown. Spike 5-7 (-9 when fruiting base) x 4-4.5 cm (bracts only). Flowers extending 2.5 cm above bracts, with 1-4 flowers open at a atime.
