| Field notes | Terrestial herb in dense clump of many shoots. Leafy shoots to 10 cm apart; to 4.8 m long. Base to 8 cm diam., reddish brown. Ligule truncate, 5 mm long hidden by clasping leaf base. Lamina to 110x20 cm; base auriculate. Inflorescence from rhizome, to 28 cm long. Peduncle to 12-20 cm long, only partly subterranean: upper part erect above the soil. Spike 7.5-15x5-10 cm, with 1-4 flowers open at a time, extending to 1.5 cm above bracts. All bracts orange-brown. Flowers plain white. Infrutescence to 32 cm long; head to 23x11 cm, narrowly ovoid. Fruit orange-brown pubescent, with a few warts at apex, bracts persistent. Eaten by rodents. Taste of centre of lower leafy shoot: pine-like. Photographed. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
