Field notes Terrestial herb. Rhizome subterranean, creeping (35-40 cm between neighbouring leafy shoots). Leafy shoot to 5.5 m long. Base to 7 cm diam., greenish brown. Sheath green. Ligule to 1 cm long, brown, pubescent. Petiole to 3 cm long. Lamina to 80 x 16 cm, not plicate, mid-green, pale green beneath; base rounded, oblique. Inflorescence from rhizome, 8 flowers open at a time. Peduncle subterranean, to 25 cm long. Spike 8 x 8 cm (incl. flowers, that in this case makes the measurement wider). Peduncular bracts pale brown. Axis rusty orange pubescent. Fertile bract orange-brown pubescent at base otherwise greenish brown. Ovary pale yellow. Calyx greenish brown, apex pale reddish brown. Corolla tube white; lobes orange-brown. Staminal tube white. Labellum pale yellow at base otherwise yellow. Filament white, anther pale-yellow. Stigma and style white. Infrutescence: peduncle to 17 cm long with 8-50 fruits per spike. Bract, bracteole and calyx persistent. Pedicel to 3 cm long. Fruit globose, to 3 x 2.7 cm, brownish green with scattered teeth. Fruits eaten by rodents. Vernacular name: olai; fruit edible. Material in spirit. DNA sampled.
