| Field notes | Terrestial herb in clump of 9 shoots, c. 10 cm apart. Leafy shoot to 5 m long. Base to 5 cm diam., cream to pale brown. Sheath green. Ligule to 1.5 cm long, green. Petiole to 1.2 cm long. Lamina narrowly ovate, to 49 x 9.5 cm. Inflorescence radical, flowering at apex of infrutescence. Peduncle to 13 cm long, subterranean. Fertile bract cream or brown when old, mucilagenous. Bracteole membranous, cream. Calyx cream tinged pale green. Corolla lobes cream. Labellum 4-lobed: central yellow band with red line bordered by red dotted patch on the two lateral white lobes. Stamen and stigma white. Infrutescence head to 15 x 12 cm with 70-100 fruits, receptacle to 9 cm long. Fruits red when young, yellowish green when mature. Aril white, edible. Tast of centre of base of leafy shoot: bitter-sweet. |
