| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in dense clump of many shoots. Leafy shoot to 3 m long. Base to 7 cm diam., red, swollen. Sheath pale yellow-brown to yellowgreen. Ligule to 3 cm long, densely pubescent. Petiole to 5 cm long, winged. Lamina to 95 x 15 cm, plicate, dark green. Inflorescence terminal, erect, to 40 cm long, axis green. Spike 9-18 cm long. Bracteole red. Calyx and buds ± red. Corolla lobes pale red. Labellum white. Stamen pale yellow-green. Fruit globose, green when young; brownish green when mature. Vernacular name: sattà eja [eja = red 1: used as distracting agent to stop kids from breast feeding. 2: flowers and fruits used as medicine for children to promote their appetite; pounded material is applied to the forehead.
