| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome pale red whenn young; stilted 0(-5) cm. Leafy shoots to 2 m long, 15-20 cm between neighbours. Base to 1.2 cm diam. Sheath yellow-green. Ligule to 3 mm long, bilobed, dark maroon brown to black. Petiole to 5 mm long. Lamina to 23 x 6 cm. Inflorescence from rhizome, to 6.5 cm long. Lamina to 23 x 6 cm. Inflorescence from rhizome to 6.5 cm long. Peduncle 2.5-4 cm. Peduncular and sterile bracts transparent pale greenish brown or pale red when young. 13-22 flowers per head. Fertile bract membranous, aple brown, bracteole similar. Calyx pale yellow. Corolla tube white; lobes pale yellow. Labellum pale yellow. Filament white, anther pale yellow. Stigma yellow. Theca hair white. Ovary with pale golden hairs. Taste of the centre of leafy shoot base: bitter. Smell of crushed leaves like lemon.Vernacular name: panas (Makassar Asli Language); fruits are edible like lusung lusung. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
