| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in dense clump, raised c. 20 cm on stilt roots. Leafy shoots to c. 4 m long. Base to 9 cm diam. Sheath yellow-green, pubescent. Ligule to 2 cm long, partly hidden by winged petiole. Petiole to 7 cm long. Lamina to 113 x 20 cm, plicate, mid-green. Inflorescence terminal, erect. Axis yellow-green. Spike to 38 x 9 cm. Bracteole cream when young, sometimes tinged pink; brown when old. Calyx and flower white with yellow-green tinge. Vernacular name: sattà kebo [kebo = white]; I : used as distracting agent to stop kids from breast feeding. 2: flowers and fruits used as medicine for children to promote their appetite; pounded material is applied to the forehead.
