| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome stout. Leafy shoots to 15 cm apart, to 2.8 m long, raised c.10 cm on dark purple stilt roots. Base to 5.5 cm diam., reticulate, orange brown. Ligule to 2.6 cm long, bilobed, laterally extended to +/- clasp the pseudostem. Lamina sessile, to 63x16 cm, dark mid-green, velvety, thick, not plicate; beneath burgundy-red. Inflorescence from base, 13.5-27 cm long; spike 6-11 cm. receptacle too 3.5 cm long in young inflorescence to 10 cm in infrutescence, yellow. Bracts golden in centre with reddish margin. Fertile bract membranous, cream in lower 3/4, apex daark red; mucro spiny. Bracteole membranous, orange or cream with pink apex. Corolla pale pink; lobes darker pink. Staminal tube pale pink. Fruit cream, coverde by persistent bracts. Centre of leaf base tasteless. Vernacular name: Pacici (duri language); fruit edible, leaves used for roofing of forest shelters. Photographed.
