Field notes Terrestial herb in dense clump of 7 leafy shoots, up to 10 cm apart. Leafy shoots to 4.8-5.5 m long with up to 28 leaves. Base to 5.5 cm diam., reddish brown. Sheath reticulate, green. Ligule pale green, 1.5-2 cm long, acute, entire. Petiole 2-4.2 (-5) cm long. Lamina to 77-82x18 cm, not plicate, mid-green, pale beneath; base truncate to slightly cordate, sides unequal; apex acute, asymmetric. Inflorescence 15-21 cm long (longest when fruiting as well). Peduncle to 11 cm long, bracts cream tinged wine-red, especially towards margin. Pedicel 6 mm long, golden-yellow. Fertile bract reddish brown. Bracteole transparent cream at base, reddish brown in upper half. Calyx cream in lower half, reddish brown in upper. Corolla tube white; lobes reddish brown in upper half. Staminal tube white. Labellum white with pink margin also on lateral lobes lower margin, apex bilobed. Stamen and stigma white. infrutescence head to 11x7 cm, bract and calyx persistent, calyx +/- parallel to axis. fruit reddish brown, rounded, spiny in upper half. Taste of the centre of leaf base: strong peppery, pine and soap. Vernacular names: 1. Kasimpo (Makassar language), used for cooking. 2. Pane (bugis language).
