| Field notes | Terrestial herb in dense clump. Leafy shoots to c. 5 m long, to 20 cm apart. Base to 7.5 cm diam., reddish brown. Sheath reddish brown at base, yellowish green higher up. Ligule at V-shaped scar. Lamina to 100 x 22 cm, brittle, dark green above; base auriculate, clasping the pseudostem. Inflorescence from near base, erect, to 34 cm long, bracteole orange-brown. Spike to 15 x 3 cm. fertile bract and bracteole orange-brown, dark brown at apex, rigid. Calyx orange-brown, cream at base, apex reddish brown. Corolla tube white, lobes pale yellow. Staminal tube white. Labellum pale yellow, centre yellow-green. Stamen white, margin of apex recurved appearing truncate. Stigma white. Infrutescence to 50 cm long. Spike to 26 x 8 cm, only with fruits in lower 2/3. Fruit dark brown with persistent, appressed calyx. Aril red. Vernacular name: ketimba (Informed by Dines). fruit is edible or used as spice.
