| Field notes | Terrestial herb in loose clump (c .30 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoots to 5.35 m long. Base to 7 cm diam., subterranean, densely brown pubescent. Sheath reticulate, dark green, mid-green near top. Ligule 1-1.5 cm long. Petiole 1.5 - 4.5 cm long. Lamina to 67 x 17 cm, narrowly ovate, base cuneate to truncate, halves of unequal width. Inflorescence near base. Peduncle to 14 cm long. Spike incl. flowers 8 x 5 cm; bracts only 6.5 cm long; flowers extending to 2.5 above bracts, with (1-)7-13 flowers open at a time. Fertile bracts reddish at base, above orange to greenish brown. Bracteole and calyx pale orange-brown with red margin. Ovary golden brown pubescent. Corolla tube crem at base to pale pink at apex; lobes pale pink to cream (faintly brown). Staminal tube pale pink. Labellum pale pink at constricted base to pure white, 3-lobed at apex. Filament pale pink; anther and stigma white. Infrutescence to 10 x 10 cm, ovoid, with persistent bracts and calyx. Fruit to 2 x 2 cm, reddsih. TAste of inner leafy shoot strongly peppery. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
