| Field notes | Terrestial herb in clump (7-20 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 3-4 m long. Base to 3.5 cm diam., reticulate, green. Sheath reticulate, pale brownish to yellow-green. Ligule to 6 mm long, truncate to slightly emarginate. Petiole to 10 mm long. Lamina 55 x 15.5 cm. Inflorescence from rhizome, erect, to 10 cm long. Peduncle subterranean, 3.5-5 cm long, ascending. Spike to 7.5 x 2.7 cm, red, vase-shaped, containing water, 1 (-2) flowers open at a time. Fertile bract, bracteole, and calyx pale pink, membranous. Corolla white in lower half, pale red to red in upper half; lobes red. Labellum yellow, reddish orange in centre. Filament pale red. Anther dark (burgundy) red. Stigma dark red almost black. Fruit covered by persistent bracts, 15 x 11 mm, pale red. MaAterial in spirit. DNA sampled. |
