Field notes Terrestial herb in loose clump c.10 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 4.7 m long. Base of leafy shoot to 6 cm diam., red. Sheath yellowish brown to green. Ligule to 7 mm long, pale brown. Lamina to 85x19 cm. Inflorescence from rhizome, ascending to erect, stout. Peduncle to 45 cm long, 4 cm diam. just below spike, scales orange to reddish brown. Spike 4.5x7-7.5 cm, mucilagenous, bracts reddish brown. Fertile bract pale pink, apex red. Bracteole pale pink, apex brown. Calyx pale pink, apex pink. Corolla tube pale pink, lobes pink. Staminal tube pale pink. Labellum red, terminal lobe dark red, lateral lobes involute. Filament white. Anther and stigma pale red. Infrutescence head to 9x12.5 cm, pedicel 6 mm long. Fruit 3x3 cm, pale orange below; in upper 1/3-1/2 dark red, and finely spiny. Taste of centre of leaf shoot base: bitter. Photographed. Material in spirit. DNA sampled.
