| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome long - creeping (>25 cm between neighbouring leafy shoots). Leafy shoot to 2 m long. Base to 4 cm diam., green. Sheath pale green. Ligule to 10 mm long, pale green. Petiole 15 mm long. Lamina to 67 x 14 cm; base attenuate. Inflorescence from base. Peduncle 5 cm, long, horizontal, scales pale brown. Spike 4.5 x 2.5 cm (bracts only; flowers extended 4 cm above bracts), with 12 flowers. Bracts white, tinged pink. Calyx cream to pale green, pale red at apex. Corolla cream to pale pink. Labellum yellowish, centre yellow with dark purple stripes bordered by pale red clouds. Staminoides pale yellow with dark red central line. Filament pale red. Anther pale yellow, crest yellow. Stigma pale red. Ovary pale red, long-hirsute. Taste of centre of leafy shoot base: early, sour. |
