Field notes Terrestial herb in loose clump (15-25 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leaf shoot to 3.9 m long. Base of leafy shoot at ground level, 5-6 cm diam., red. Sheath reddish to orange-brown. Lamina sessile, to 75 x 13 cm, mid green; beneath pale with red blotches or dots. Inflorescence from base, ascending to erect, to 40 cm long, scales red. Spike to 6 x 7.5 cm, mucilagenous, bracts red. Apex depressed. Fertile bract pale reddish brown, apex dark reddish. Bracteole pale pink - darker pink at apex. Calyx cream, apex pink. Corolla pale pink, lobes red. Labellum red; lateral lobes involute. Filament pale red. Anther and stigma red. Infrutescence head to 10 x 13 cm with 53-67 fruits. Receptacle 4-4.5 x 3 cm in inflorescence. Pedicel to 10 mm long. Fruit 33 x 28 mm, lower half pale brown, upper half reddish, finely spiny. Vernacular name: cimpang (Dondo Language). Used medicinally against fever; fruits edible. Material in spirit. DNA sampled.
