| Field notes | Terrestial herb in dense clump, on stilts. Rhizome raised c. 20 cm above ground. Leafy shoot to 3.4 m long. Base of leafy shoot to 4 cm diam., red. Sheath yellow-green. Ligule 3 cm long, reddish, caducous. Lamina sessile, to 60 x 13 cm, dull mid-green; beneath pale green, tinged reddish especially near margin, margin red; apex twisted. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle to 16 cm long, +/- erect. Spike 6 x 4 cm, ovoid, not mucilagenous, bracts reddish brown. Fertile bract cream, with burgundy red margin c. 5 mm wide. Bracteole cream, transparent with red margin. Calyx cream transparent with red apex. Corolla tube and lobes white. Labellum yellow; terminal lobe margin cream; stamen and stigma white. Taste of centre of leafy shoot base: sour and aromatic similar to Etlingera elatior. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
