| Field notes | Terrestial herb in loose clump (to 25 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 5.2 m long. Base of leafy shoot to 7 cm diam., reddish green. Seath yellow-green. Ligule to 1 cm long, hidden by clasping leaf bases, pale yellow-green. Lamina to 120x22 cm, mid-green above; pale green beneath; base auriculate, lobes clasping the pseudostem. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle ascending to erect, to 25 cm long; scales pale brown, rigid. Fertile bracts: lower similar to sterile bracts; upper creamish brown, pale brown at apex, mucronate. Calyx cream, apex pale reddish. Corolla white, lobes pale yellow. Filament white. Anther pale brown. Stigma white. Fully developed infrutescence head to 23x12 cm, ovoid to narrowly ovoid. Fruit 3.5x3 cm, with two lateral nobs, bract persistent, calyx persistent, adpressed. Vernacular name: Tikala(Kulawi language). Taste of the centre of leafy shoot base: pine. Photographed.
