| Field notes | Terrestial herb in dense clump (8-14 cm between neighbouring shoots). Rhizome lifted by red stilt-roots to 10 cm above ground. Leafy shoot to 2.9 m long; base to 4 cm diam., pale red; sheath yellow-green, ligule to 40 mm long, pale brown, caducous. Lamina sessile, to 59 x 15 cm, mid-green, slightly plicate. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle to 15 cm long, +/- horizontal; scales dark brown. Spike ovoid, to 11 x 8 cm, mucilagenous. Receptacle 4.5-7.5 cm long. Bracts dark red. Fertile bracts white, margin red to dark red. Bracteole transparent white at base - red in upper half. Calyx white, apex red. Corolla and labellum plain pale yellow. Stamen and stigma cream. Fruit c. 15 x 10 mm, white tinged pale red. Vernacular name: katimba (Napu Language); fruit edible. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
