Field notes Terrestial herb. C. 0.5 m between neighbouring shoots. Leafy shoot to 2.8 m long, with up to 26 leaves. Base of leafy shoot to 4 cm diam., dark brown. Sheath brownish green, pubescent. Ligule to 6 mm long. Petiole to 20 mm long. Lamina 45 x 7.5 cm, dark green, burgundy-red beneath; base auriculate, margin curiously undulating. Inflorescence from rhizome, 17 cm long. Peduncle 5-11 cm long, subterranean, scales pale red. Spike cup shaped, 5-6 x 3.5-4.5 cm, bracts dark purple.darker toward apex, mucronate. Flower extended 2 cm above bracts. Outer fertile bracts similar to sterile ones. Bracteole with 1 stilt to base, dark purple especially at apex. Calyx reddish purple, apex dark purple. Corolla tube pale yellowish. Lobes pale yellow with 5 m long purple apex. Staminal tube cream. Labellum pale yellowish. Filament and anther cream. Stigma red. Ovary yellowish, densely hirsute. fruit 2.4 x 2.4 cm, globose with spiny ridges, golden-orange pubescent. Taste of the central part of lower leafy shoot: like mutmeg (Myristica fragrans). Material in spirit. DNA smapled.
