| Field notes | Terrestial herb in dense clump raised to 15 cm above ground by reddish brown stilt roots. Leafy shoot to 3 m long, with up to 25 leaves. Base to 3.5 cm diam., reddish to green. Sheath yellow-green. Ligule to 37 mm long, membranous, caducous, densely pubescent, pale greenish brown. Lamina sessile, to 46 x 13.5 cm, mid-green, slighlty plicate, beneath with short-lasting, wooly indumentum. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle 6-9 cm long, scales brown and dry or yellowish brown with reddish tinge to apex. Spike globose to ovoid, 3-7.5 cm x 3-5.5-7 cm, widest when fruiting at base, mucilagenous. Sterile bracts pale yellowish green in centre, apex orange brown to purple. Receptacle globose 2.5-5.5 cm long. Fertile bract (upper) membranous white with brownish apex. Bracteole and calyx pale pink. Corolla incl. lobes pale yellow. Labellum yellow with orange-red centre under the stamen. Stamen and stigma yellowish white. Fruits often appearing while flowering at apex. Fruits hidden by bract, to 15 x 10-13 mm, broadest above the middle (obovoid), yellowish green with reddish tinge. Immature. Taste of centre of leaf base: sour, similar to Etlingera elatior. Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
