Field notes Terrestial herb. Rhizome long-creeping (0.2-0.5 m between shoots). Leafy shoot to 3.8 m long, erect. Base to 4 cm diam. Sheath green, glabrous, with purple patch at base of petiole. Ligule to 10 mm long, entire, rounded, green. Petiole to 2 cm. Lamina to 50 x 12 cm, narrowly ovate. Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle to 10 cm long, subterranean, scales red. Spike 4 x 3.5 cm to 6 x 5 cm. Sterile bracts spreading, pale reddish, darker at amrgin. Fertile bracts reddish brown or pale brown in centre, darker towards apex. Bracteole membranous, red or brown. Calyx pale red. Corolla tube white, lobes white - red in upper 1/2-1/3. Labellum very pale yellow, white in centre. Stamen white. Stigma pale pink. Infrutescence with 1-3 fruits, bract persistent. Fruit 2.3 x 2.3 cm, pyriform, apex flat with irregular ridges, looking star-shaped from above, brown with orange hairs. Taste of the centre of leaf base: bitter, pine. Material in spirit. DNA smapled.
