| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome 1.5-3.5 cm wide, pale pink to red when young. Leafy shoot15-50 cm apart, to 4.4 m long, with up to 20 leaves per shoot. Base to 7 cm diam., orange-brown. Sheath brownish green, pubescent. Ligule to 19 mm long. Petiole 3.8 cm long. Lamina 68 x 16 cm, narrowly ovate, dark green above with red-brown margin; beneath green tinged +/- reddish - especially when young; base auriculate. Inflorescence from rhizome near the base. Peduncle subterranean, to 10 cm long, scales distichous, red. Spike 5 x 4 cm. Sterile bracts reddish brown, spreading, mucronate. Receptacle 20-40 mm long. Spike flat-topped when young-later stages extending receptacle. Fertile bract reddish to brownish, reddish at apex. Bracteole golden brown at base, reddish at paex. Calyx very pale pink with red apices. Corolla tube white, lobes red in upper half. Stamen cream. Stigma pale red. 3-5 flowers open at a time. Infrutescence subglobose, 9 x 9 cm with 25 fruits. Fruit rounded with irregularly ridged to spiny apex, 2.5 x 2.5 cm. Aril bright red. Taste of central base unpleasant, bitter, pine-like. Material in spirit. DNA smapled. |
