| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in dense clump of many shoots. Leafy shoot 5.4 m long, lower leaves dehiscent and sheaths drying up brownish red. Base of leafy shoot to 7 cm diam., distinctly swollen, reddish purple. Sheath 2.5 cm diam. at 10 cm above base, pale yellow-green when fresh. Ligule 13 mm, yellowish green. Petiole to 3 cm long with a callus at base. Lamina to 70 x 13.5 cm, narrowly obovate. Inflorescence terminal, pendent. Peduncle 15-20 cm long. Spike to 27 cm long x 2.5 cm (flowers)/ x 5.5 cm (fruits). Bracts drying dark brown in old flowers. Male flowers: calyx pale green, labellum pale yellowish cream, not open, upside down. Vernacular name: kesehe rangdang (tombuluh dialect; named after Gunung Kasehe; randang means red). Juice from stem used to heal wounds. |
