| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in dense clump of 7 shoots, 4 m tall. Leafy shoot to 5.5 m long. Lower leaves dehiscent, leaving dry, reddish brown leaf sheaths. Ligule 13 mm long, purple-brown. Callus at base of petiole. Lamina to 86 x 16 cm, halves unequal, slightly plicate. Inflorescence terminal, pendent, to 45 cm long. Bracts persistent, to 26 cm long, pale brown. Peduncle to 23 cm. Spike to 20 x 3 cm. Old bracts, calyces dead and dark brown; young yellow-green. Corolla lobes yellow-green. Labellum cream. Flowers upside-down. Bisexual flowers open first; female flowers last. Fruit globose, 2.3 cm diam. Vernacular name: tu'is (Minahassa, Sangir language). |
