| Field notes | Terrestial herb in clump: 20-25 cm between neighbouring shoots. Leafy shoot to 4.5 m long with up to 28 leaves per shoot. Base to 5 cm diam., slightly red. Sheath green, glabrous. Ligule 1 cm long, green. Petiole 10-25 mm: longest on lowest leaf. Lamina gradually reducing in size from bottom to top, 55-60 cm x 12-14 cm, narrowly ovate, base truncate to slightly cordate, apex acute. Inflorescence from the rhizome near the base of shoot, 25 cm long. Peduncle ascending to erect, 10-15 cm long. Afternoon flowers ivory with pinkish tinge. Fertile bract, bracteole, and calyx cream tinged purple-brown at apex. Labellum pale pink; pale yellow in centre. Vernacular name: tu'is (Minahassa, Sangir language). Inner shoot tastes of hot pepper and lemon. |
