| Field notes | Terrestial herb in clump (4-10 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 4 m tall. Base subterranean. Sheath green. Ligule to 12 mm long, pale green. Lamina sessile, to 60 x 12 cm long, plicate. Inflorescence terminal, pendulous, 25 x 5 cm. Bracts pale green, +/- tinged pink (rarely red). Bracteole pale red. Calyx pale yellow. Flowers plain white, upside-down. Fruit pale green to white. Vernacula name: ivavia (Rotokas language; young leafy shoot centre used as growth enhancer) |
