| Field notes | Terrestial herb in clump (c. 15 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoots to c. 5 m long. Base to 8 cm diam., brownish. Sheath green. Ligule to 15 mm long, brownish. Lamina sessile, to 100 x 20 cm, plicate. Inflorescence terminal, erect, to 25 cm long. Lower supporting bracts pale brown. Fertile bracts cream or variously tinged purple-red. Flowers plain white. Labellum +/- pale brown in centre. Fruit not seen - even by locals. Vernaculaar name: tukou (Solos language, coastal dialect, Buka; used for wrapping, climbing ropes, at sing sings). |
