| Field notes | Terrestial herb to 3.5 m tall, in clump (13-15 cm between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 4.3 m long, arching. Base to 6.5 cm diam., reddish brown. Sheath yellowish green. Ligule to 2 cm long, acute, yellowish green. Pseudopetiole c. 1 cm long, attenuately winged. Lamina to 75 x 15.5 cm, not plicate, mid-green, pubescent beneath. Inflorescence radical, to 15 cm long. Spike 10 x 3 cm. Bracts pale brown to cream. Flowers plain white. Fruit 3.5 x 2 cm, cream, calyx persistent. Vernacular name: babau (Coastal solos, Buka; fruit eaten, leaves used for wrapping in the murmur, and as decoration during sing sings). Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
