| Field notes | Terrestial herb. Rhizome long creeping (to 1 m between neighbouring shoots). Leafy shoot to 3.5 m tall. Base to 4-5 cm diam., pale brown. Sheath green. Ligule to 15 mm long, pale green, margin densely ciliate. Petiole to 10 mm long. Lamina to 71 x 14 cm, mid-green, not plicate, glabrous. Inflorescence radical, to 17.5 cm, embedded in the soil: only flowers appearing above, with 1(n=2)-2(n=7) flowers per inflorescence. All bracts cream. Calyx cream tinged pink at apex. Corolla white, lobes pale pink, dorsal longer than stigma. Labellum red, dark in centre; lateral lobes recurved, pale pink to white; apex emarginate, incission to 7 mm. Filament cream; anther cream with pale red centre abd dark red apex. Stigma brilliant red. vernacular name: pakeke(Bola Language; used for making grass skirt). Material in spirit. DNA sampled. |
