Field notes Terrestial herb to 2.5 m long, erect. Shoots in dense clump (c. 5 cm apart). Base to 4 cm diam., pale brown, cream when fresh. Sheath yellowish green. Ligule to 11 mm long, pale brown, entire to slightly emarginate. Lamina sessile, to 56 x 12 cm, dark green, slightly plicate. Inflorescence terminal, erect, 10 cm long. Bracts cream, dark brown when old. Flowers white. Vernacular name: bataan punyu (Titan buke language "bataan" meaning "shoot"; the shoot is used for climbing coconut palms and the leaves are used for keeping sago in bags or in the filtering process.
