| Field notes | Terrestial herb, to 6 m tall. Leafy shoots 2.8-7.3 m when flowering, in dense clump, slightly raised by strong supportive roots. Base to 14 cm diam., pale brown. Seath green. Lower leaves short-lasting: older leafy shoots only have leaves clustered in the oppermost part. Ligule to 15 mm long, entire, pale green when young, pubescent. Pseudo petiole to 9 cm, margin winged 2 mm wide, pubescent, canaliculate. Lamina to 165 x 31 cm, plicate, pubescent, beneath. Inflorescence terminal, erect, to 66 cm long. Peduncle to 26 cm. Spike 40 x 10 cm, with up to about 100 cincinni. Supporting bracts green when inflorescence is exposed. Young bract and bracteole green when young-old ones brown. Calyx pale yellowish green. Flowers: corolla lobes pale green. Labellum white. Informed to be pollinated by bats in early evening. Fruit 2 x 2 cm, globular, green, with persistent, brown calyx. Vernacular name: ngaheo (Nali language; used for thatching the roof apex.) |
