| Field notes | Terrestial herb, in dense clump of up to 4 shoots. Leafy shoot 6-10 m long. Base to 17 cm diam., green, often persistent after leafy shoot has rotted away. Stilted to 60 cm above ground. Stilroots to 2.5 cm diam., green. Sheath green when fresh; lower leaf sheaths often drying up pale brownish during flowering while maintaining upper leaves. Ligule to 25 mm lonf, pale green. Lamina to 147-173 x 31-38 cm, narrowly obovate, plicate, glabrous, mid green; base petiole like to 6 cm, winged, + crenate. Inflorescence terminal, erect, to 60 cm long, with 2-3bracts, 43 x 7 cm, pale yellowish green when young. Spike to 32 cm. Buds shiny green. Flower cream, corolla lobes with green apeces. Fruit to 2.5 x 3 cm, globose, green. Vernacular name: tichakela (Birau language; informant from Guadalcanal). |
