| Field notes | Terrestial herb, to 4 m tall, in clump (to 10 cm between neighbouring shoots). Base to 6 cm diam., pale purple-brown. Sheath green. Ligule to 12 mm long. Lamina sessile, to 92 x 27 cm, narrowly obovate, plicate, pubescent beneath, base attenuate. Inflorescence terminal, erect. Spike to 15 x 9 cm, purple. It is often pseudo-viviparus with "baby" plantlets sprouting just below the spike; sometimes these are reduced almost to inflorescences only. Flowers cream. Fruit purple. Vernacula name: bena (Bauro language). |
