| Field notes | Terrestial herb, 2-4 m tall, in loose clump. Base to 6 cm diam., green. Sheath green. Ligule to 15 mm long, golden brown. Petiole 0-2 cm long. Lamina to c. 80 x 20 cm, narrowly obovate, plicate. Inflorescence terminal, erect. Spike to 25 x 12 cm. Bracts rigid purple. Flowers white. Protruding 2 cm beyond bracts. Calyx cream with pinkish apex or all purple. Ovary pale brown. Obseved visited by large butterflies. Fruit obovoid, 4 x 2.5 cm, reddish purple.
