Field notes Terrestrial herb in clump. Leafy shoot to 5.5 m; base 8 cm diam., reddish brown. Sheath green, smooth. Ligule to 1.2 cm, green, ± slightly emarginate. Petiole to 2 cm. Lamina to 77 x 16 cm, dark green, red beneath, base ± auriculate, midrib red above on young leaves. Inflorescence from base, 18-81 cm, erect. Axis green, not completely covered by the pale yellow-green bracts, uppermost enclosing base of spike. Spike 6-7 x 3-6 cm with 5 sterile bracts, white tinged green at base and pink at apex. Receptacle 1.2-1.5 cm with 38-49 flowers. Fertile bract short-lived, tinged red - also inside. Bracteole cream tinged red. Calyx red with yellow-green apex. Corolla tube white; lobes dark red (burgundy) with white margin. Labellum dark red with white margin laterally, yellowish at apex. Filament cream. Anther red, darker at apex. Stigma purple. Infructescence to 5.5 x 8 cm, with 2-20 fruits. Fruit green, apex truncate to slightly depressed. Deposited at: AAU, BO, E, L. Material in spirit. Photographed. DNA sampled.
