| Field notes | Terrestrial herb to 4.3 m. Rhizome subterranean, long-creeping (up to 110 cm between shoots); scales to 7 cm, cream. Base of leafy shoot to 6 cm diam., greenish brown, deeply reticulate. Sheath reticulate, pale yellow-greenish brown. Ligule c. 2 cm. Petiole c. 2 cm. Lamina to 75 x 16(-21) cm. Inflorescence from rhizome embedded in the soil with 28 flowers, 1-6 flowers open at a time. Peduncle to 9 cm, bracteal part of spike 10 x 5 cm; bracts not spreading to create lacunae, cream at base - brownish in upper half. Fertile bract red in upper half, inner ones membranous. Bracteole and calyx cream with red apices. Corolla lobes membranous, apex pink; dorsal lobe longer than stigma but erect above it. Labellum orange-red, 42 mm long, apex 17 mm wide, lateral lobes with orange-yellow margin. Anther sessile, pale red. Stigma brilliant red. Infructescence head 5 x 8 cm.
