Field notes Terrestrial herb to 4.5 m. Leafy shoots up to 40 cm apart, with 23 leaves; base 5-6 cm diam., reddish to green; sheath green; ligule c. 1.5 cm, green with purple patches; petiole 5-7 cm; lamina 90 x 16, pubescent below, strong foetid smell when crushed. Inflorescence from rhizome near base, to 13 cm; peduncle to 6 cm, peduncular bracts white - upper with purplish tinge near apex; bracteal spike 8 x 4 cm, with 11-16 flowers per inflorescence, 3 open at a time; sterile bracts white with purple tinge near margin; fertile bract, bracteole and calyx membranous, white; corolla lobe red, reaching only base of anther; labellum orange-red, dark red in centre; anther and stigma red.
