| Field notes | Terrestrial herb in loose clump (20-30 cm between shoots). Strong supportive roots 0.5 x 10-19 cm, dark red, lifting the rhizome 0-10 cm above the ground level. Leafy shoot 3.5-4.5 m, with 19-23 leaves; base 5 cm diam., pinkish; sheath with green and white chessed pattern. Ligule 1.5-2.0 cm, entire, acute, densely hairy, dark green. Petiole 0-1 cm, green. Lamina to 58 x 14 cm, midrib red and pubescent beneath. Inflorescence 20-25 cm, erect. Peduncle 9-19 cm, bracts red, whitish pilose, margin red. Spike 6 x 5 cm. Flowers raised 4 cm above bracteal involucre. Sterile bracts dark red with white reticulate pattern. Fertile bracts and bracteole membranous, cream. Calyx membranous, apex pink.
