Field notes Terrestrial herb to 6 m. Rhizome long-creeping (to I.5 m between shoots), 2.5 cm across. Base 10 cm across. Leaf sheath greenish brown, pubescent and pinkish red in lower part when young. Ligule 2.5 cm, brown, pubescent. Petiole to 6 cm. Lamina to 116 x 23, smooth, pale green, young leaf tinged brownish, base asymetric. Inflorescence from rhizome near base, 29 cm, with 16-22 flowers; 6-8 open at a time. Peduncle to 19 cm, spike 9 x 3-3.8 cm. Peduncular scales cream to pale brown. Sterile bract cream with dark red apex. Fertile bract cream with red apex. Bracteole translucent. Calyx pink, apex pubescent. Corolla lobes pinkish red, dorsal lobe reaches base of anther. Labellum5.8-6 x 1.8 cm, dark red in centre, margin orange-red or bright yellow; apex entire or ± emarginate. Anther red. Stigma pale red. Infructescence with 8 fruits, purple red. Smell and taste of shoot: pleasant cabbage-like. Deposited at: BKF, E, AAU, PSU. DNA sampled. Photographed. Material in alcohol (E00783742 & 43).
